About The Position

The Associated Press is seeking three (3) part-time, temporary newspersons for its Regional Sports Desk. These hires will be responsible for writing, editing, and rewriting sports stories, including those related to college and professional leagues. The role involves communicating with various sources such as AP staff, stringers, and Sports Information Directors. This is a remote position requiring 4 to 14 hours of work per week and flexibility in scheduling. The newspersons will collaborate with a team of journalists, reporters, and editors, utilizing Pronto and other AP and third-party automated systems. Strong communication skills are essential for working with a diverse team across text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive, and graphics formats. The role demands the ability to work under deadline pressure, write about a wide range of sports, and possess a strong news sense to create shareable content.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three years of full-time news experience as a news assistant or researcher in a news bureau or regional desk.
  • Strong knowledge of sports (professional and college).
  • Proven interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects.
  • Self-directed and able to work effectively with others in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Home computer (PC or Mac) and access to Wi-Fi is required.
  • Must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Authorization to work in the United States for any employer is mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Write, edit, and re-write sports stories including college and professional leagues.
  • Communicate with various sources, including AP staff members, stringers, and Sports Information Directors.
  • Collaborate with a team of journalists, reporters, and editors.
  • Write, edit, and re-write sports stories using Pronto and other AP and third-party automated systems.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills and work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • Be able to work under deadline pressure.
  • Write about a wide range of sports.
  • Have a great sense of news, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms.
