About The Position

The Associated Press seeks three (3) part-time, temporary newspersons for its Regional Sports Desk. The part-time hires will be required to write, edit and re-write sports stories including college and professional leagues. To perform the tasks, they will be required to communicate with various sources, including but not limited to AP staff members, stringers and Sports Information Directors. This is a part-time, remote position ranging from 4 to 14 hours per week that requires scheduling flexibility.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three years of full-time news experience as a news assistant or researcher in a news bureau or regional desk.
Strong knowledge of sports (professional and college).
Proven interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects.
Self-directed and able to work effectively with others in a fast-paced production environment
Home computer (PC or Mac) and access to Wi-Fi is required.
Must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays.
Authorization to work in the United States for any employer is mandatory.

Responsibilities

Write, edit and re-write sports stories using Pronto and other AP and third-party automated systems.
Communicate with various sources, including but not limited to AP staff members, stringers and Sports Information Directors.
Collaborate with a team of journalists, reporters and editors.
Demonstrate strong communication skills and work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
Be able to work under deadline pressure and to be able write about a wide range of sports.
Have a great sense of news, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms.
