About The Position

Grand Canyon University (GCU) partners with nonprofit organizations, specifically the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, to provide community service opportunities for students. This role involves assisting St. Vincent de Paul with their charitable programs, which include services for the homeless, food distribution, medical/dental care, and housing assistance. The position is designated as Federal Work-Study Community Service Learning Program (FWS-CSLP) approved, meaning services are open and accessible to non-GCU community members. Applicants must complete the FAFSA to determine FWS eligibility. The work schedule is dependent on the needs of St. Vincent de Paul, with a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic year.

Requirements

  • Enrolled at GCU as a full-time student in a bachelor’s program or master’s program.
  • Maintain a 2.0 GPA as a Bachelor level student or a 3.0 GPA as a Master level student.
  • Maintain good financial and academic (SAP) standing with the University.
  • Have passion and willingness to help others succeed.
  • Possess strong ethics, integrity, and sense of responsibility.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Leadership potential and confidence to direct and support volunteer groups.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working in a warehouse environment.
  • Must wear closed-toed shoes.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect donated canned goods for expiration dates and sort them into appropriate categories for distribution.
  • Assist in scanning and sorting food items donated by outside agencies to be routed to the appropriate SVdP departments.
  • Help manage and organize Starbucks donations and other perishable items.
  • Support setup, operation, and cleanup of bi-weekly Saturday food distributions to the public.
  • Use pallet jacks to move inventory, sweep, and maintain cleanliness, and assist with general organization.
  • Lead and direct volunteer groups in various tasks, ensuring a positive and productive experience for all participants.
