The VP Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) is responsible for planning and leading daily operations for Baylor Scott and White Health (BSWH), encompassing all hospital units, professional services, and support functions. This role ensures BSWH hospitals deliver high-quality, cost-effective patient care by overseeing hospital plans, policies, and programs to meet financial, service, quality, regulatory, and community goals. The COO manages activities to evaluate and improve hospital programs and practices, ensuring compliance with all laws, regulations, and BSWH policies. They may represent the hospital to external authorities and collaborate closely with the hospital President, clinical leadership, and the BSWH executive team to enhance hospital operations. As an entity Vice President (VP), this role develops strategy and business plans for business units, which may include smaller entity vice presidents. The VP manages strategy execution, identifies resource needs, and guides significant tactical recommendations, focusing on current-year operations while establishing multi-year strategies. Errors in this role can have a long-term negative effect on the organization's success. The VP manages and directs a single business unit or region, typically overseeing many levels of subordinate directors and managers with varied skills. They have managerial accountability for staffing and budgets for a large span of control, with at least two managers or directors, and exercise wide latitude in setting targets and approaches to critical assignments, being accountable for executing part of the business strategy.
