About The Position

The VP Chief Operating Officer (COO) reports to the UVA Community Health Chief Nursing and Operating Officer (CNO/COO) and serves as a senior operational leader with accountability for both an assigned medical center and designated functions across UVA Community Health. The COO is responsible for effective and efficient facility operations, financial performance, growth, and execution of organizational priorities. In addition, the COO provides UVA Community Health-wide leadership for assigned departments or functions, driving alignment, standardization, operational excellence, and effective use of resources across facilities. The COO partners closely with the entity ACNO, physicians, fellow COOs, and other leaders to advance quality, patient experience, team member engagement, stewardship, and organizational performance. The role requires the ability to lead through both direct authority and influence within a highly matrixed environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree - Business/Healthcare Administration or related field
  • Five years of progressive healthcare leadership experience with demonstrated responsibility for complex operations, financial performance, and multidisciplinary teams required.
  • Proven executive leadership, financial and operational acumen, strategic thinking, relationship-building, change leadership, and team development skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through both formal authority and influence within a complex healthcare environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience leading across multiple facilities, service lines, or matrixed organizational structures preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides executive leadership for the effective and efficient operation of the assigned medical center, including financial and operational performance.
  • Translates organizational strategy into operational priorities and holds leaders accountable for execution and results.
  • Drives facility and service-line growth, access, operational efficiency, and performance.
  • Partners in dyad leadership with the entity ACNO to ensure alignment of clinical and operational priorities and effective workflows across services.
  • Provides UVA Community Health-wide leadership for assigned departments or functions, establishing consistent expectations, advancing standardization, sharing best practices, and optimizing resources across facilities.
  • Evaluates performance within assigned system functions and leads improvement efforts related to financial, operational, workforce, service, and other organizational priorities.
  • Collaborates with fellow COOs, physicians, and clinical and administrative leaders to address issues that cross facility or functional boundaries.
  • Maintains and strengthens relationships with medical staff, nursing, team members, and other stakeholders to support high-quality, cost-effective care.
  • Demonstrates strong financial stewardship, including oversight of budgets, productivity, expense management, resource utilization, and return on investment.
  • Serves as an executive leader in quality, safety, patient experience, and team member engagement, partnering with appropriate clinical and organizational leaders to advance outcomes.
  • Develops leaders, builds high-performing teams, and promotes accountability, collaboration, belonging, and continuous improvement.
  • Represents the organization appropriately with governing bodies, community leaders, and external stakeholders and develops relationships that support organizational and community priorities.

Benefits

  • The base compensation range for this role is $200k - $240k annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education. Please note that the pay range does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs.
