About The Position

The S&B is Grinnell College’s independent, student-run newspaper, founded in 1894. It is an award-winning publication with a monthly readership of more than 75,000 students, alumni, faculty, staff, citizens of Grinnell and many others. In spring 2026, The S&B won the Iowa College Media Association Best Newspaper of the Year award for its 2025-2026 coverage. The S&B covers everything from breaking news to long-term investigative stories. The Visuals Editor works with section editors and writers to direct the visual content of The S&B, including photos, graphics and illustrations. They coordinate with staff photographers and the graphics designer to produce visuals for articles, and edit all visuals (photos, graphics, comics, illustrations) to ensure optimization for the website editions of the paper as well as social media. The Visuals Editor also manages The S&B’s media library. The position is expected to work approximately 8 hours a week.

Requirements

  • Good visual instincts
  • Experience using editing software (ideally Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop)
  • Technical knowledge of photography
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Software and computer knowledge
  • Previous technology experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Performing routine technical tasks under minimal supervision while exercising moderate levels of independent judgment and initiative
  • High degree of discretion with confidential information
