About The Position

The S&B is seeking Section Editors to oversee various aspects of content creation and editorial direction. This role involves managing specific content areas, guiding staff writers, and ensuring timely and high-quality publication across print and web platforms. The positions require a blend of operational, mentorship, and editorial responsibilities, with a focus on developing investigative and beat projects, leading teams, and maintaining editorial standards.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing day-to-day news stories, typically within the scope of the Grinnell College community, including coverage of events, announcements, and investigations.
  • Leading the breaking news team, ensuring timely stories are published on deadline.
  • Overseeing stories related to the town of Grinnell and its people and places, including city council and school board meetings, Grinnell-Newburg School District news, and local businesses.
  • Overseeing stories that feature a person, event, place, or historical memory, including cultural events, historical deep dives, and lifestyle pieces.
  • Overseeing stories relating to visual arts, fine arts, and music, including concerts, performances, exhibitions, and artist talks.
  • Overseeing stories that cover the Grinnell College sports teams and college athletics, including season previews, athlete profiles, and team performance analysis.
  • Overseeing the opinions page, facilitating community responses to S&B articles or general opinions, spearheading staff editorials, and organizing back-page content like comics, polls, and crosswords.
  • Assisting editors-in-chief and the editorial team.
  • Attending weekly meetings with Editors-in-Chief, DSA supervisor, and journalism advisor whenever available.
  • Strengthening The S&B’s print products, web design, and capacity for multimedia projects.
  • Guiding staff writer/photographer/illustrator teams on developing at least one investigative/beat project per semester.
  • Keeping track of staff progress towards producing at least one investigative piece per semester.
