About The Position

The Science Department at Chatham University invites applications for a full-time, one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry for the 2026–2027 academic year. The successful candidate will support undergraduate chemistry instruction, with primary teaching responsibilities in organic chemistry laboratory courses and potential additional instruction in general chemistry or organic chemistry lecture, depending on expertise. This position is intended to provide temporary instructional coverage for courses previously distributed across faculty lines and to support continuity in the chemistry curriculum during the 2026–2027 academic year.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate chemistry laboratories.
  • Commitment to effective, inclusive undergraduate teaching.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching Organic Chemistry lecture and/or laboratory courses.
  • Experience teaching General Chemistry.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students in a liberal arts or small college environment.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety practices and chemical hygiene expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a full-time instructional load consistent with Chatham University's expectations for visiting assistant faculty (24 credits or equivalent instructional load per academic year, with credit-hour equivalencies applied where appropriate for laboratory-intensive teaching).
  • Teach multiple sections of Organic Chemistry Laboratory.
  • Teach additional chemistry coursework, depending on departmental need and candidate expertise.
  • Support General Chemistry or Organic Chemistry lecture courses.
  • Prepare, deliver, and assess laboratory and/or lecture instruction.
  • Coordinate with chemistry faculty to maintain consistency across sections.
  • Hold regular office hours and support student learning.
  • Participate in departmental activities related to teaching and curriculum coordination.
