About The Position

Chatham University's Science Department is seeking a full-time, one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry for the 2026–2027 academic year. This role will support undergraduate chemistry instruction, focusing primarily on organic chemistry laboratory courses, with potential for additional lecture instruction in general or organic chemistry based on the candidate's expertise. The position is designed to provide temporary instructional coverage and ensure curriculum continuity.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate chemistry laboratories.
  • Commitment to effective, inclusive undergraduate teaching.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching Organic Chemistry lecture and/or laboratory courses.
  • Experience teaching General Chemistry.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students in a liberal arts or small college environment.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety practices and chemical hygiene expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a full-time instructional load of 24 credits or equivalent per academic year, with credit-hour equivalencies for laboratory-intensive teaching.
  • Teach multiple sections of Organic Chemistry Laboratory.
  • Potentially teach additional chemistry coursework, depending on departmental needs and candidate expertise.
  • Possibly support General Chemistry or Organic Chemistry lecture courses.
  • Prepare, deliver, and assess laboratory and/or lecture instruction.
  • Coordinate with chemistry faculty to ensure consistency across course sections.
  • Hold regular office hours and support student learning.
  • Participate in departmental activities related to teaching and curriculum coordination.
