About The Position

East Tennessee State University Department of Music seeks a one-year visiting assistant professor of piano to begin on August 15, 2026. The successful candidate will teach piano courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels that will include applied lessons, pedagogy, literature, and ensemble. The successful candidate will also serve as piano area coordinator and assist with teaching assignment for all piano courses and staff work. This includes collaborative pianists, class piano courses, accompanying courses, and collaborative coaching courses.

Requirements

  • Earned doctorate degree in piano performance or piano pedagogy
  • Studio teaching experience
  • Record of high-level musicianship in solo, chamber, and/or ensemble settings

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching experience at the collegiate/university level
  • Expertise in jazz and/or non-Western traditions

Responsibilities

  • Teach weekly applied piano lessons (undergraduate and graduate levels)
  • Develop syllabi, other course materials, and submit course grades in a timely manner
  • Schedule and assess piano juries each semester
  • Schedule and attend piano studio concerts and events, including degree recitals, piano ensemble concerts, studio recitals, and department recital hours
  • Recruit students for the piano studio (undergraduate and graduate levels)
  • Schedule and assess prospective student auditions
  • Assist with the assignment of piano student scholarships in consultation with the Chair
