About The Position

The Art Department at Pomona College invites applications for a one-year, non-tenure track, Visiting Assistant Professor. The position is full-time and has a teaching load of five courses for the academic year. Each semester, the successful candidate will teach two painting courses. One will be an introductory course covering the fundamentals of oil painting; the other, an intermediate or advanced painting course, which should include a figure painting course during the year. In line with the learning outcomes of our department, these courses should address the foundational, theoretical, and critical skills associated with the creation of art. The fifth course can be from the candidate’s own area of interest and research, and could include performance, installation, multimedia, drawing, art theory, use of technology or design. The Art Department includes five faculty members, with full participation expected in department events and pedagogical functions such as exhibitions and critiques for our majors. The department has its own gallery, offering abundant opportunities for visiting artists to exhibit. Our students come from a range of backgrounds and interests, and the preferred candidate should demonstrate a commitment to engage with our wide-ranging student body, adapting their pedagogy to reach those who are coming to an art class for the first time, while providing challenges for students with more experience.
