About The Position

Pomona College, a premier liberal arts college located near Los Angeles, California, is seeking a one-year, non-tenure track, Visiting Assistant Professor of Art for its Art Department. This full-time position carries a teaching load of five courses for the academic year. The successful candidate will teach two painting courses each semester: an introductory course on oil painting fundamentals and an intermediate or advanced painting course, which will include a figure painting course during the year. These courses are expected to address foundational, theoretical, and critical skills in art creation. The fifth course can be in an area of the candidate's interest, potentially including performance, installation, multimedia, drawing, art theory, technology, or design. The Art Department, comprising five faculty members, expects full participation in departmental activities such as exhibitions and critiques. The department features its own gallery, providing opportunities for visiting artists to exhibit their work. The college serves a diverse student body, and the preferred candidate should demonstrate a commitment to engaging with students from various backgrounds, adapting pedagogy to accommodate both beginners and experienced art students. Pomona College is a selective private liberal arts college with approximately 1700 undergraduate students and a seven-to-one student/faculty ratio. Requirements

  • MFA in Painting/Fine Arts
  • College teaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to teach and mentor exceptional students of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to utilize pedagogical practices that are rigorous, inclusive, and promote academic equity.
  • Ability to manage the painting studio, including ordering and maintaining materials and supplies within budget.
  • Ability to oversee proper use of storage and supplies, and adhere to safety procedures for solvents and waste disposal.
  • Ability to keep the studio in good condition for classes and student work.
  • Proof of the legal right to work in the United States as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 for the duration of the contract.
  • Ability to perform essential job duties without imposing risk of substantial harm to self or others.
