We invite applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Intelligence Analysis (IA) within the School of Integrated Sciences (SIS). SIS supports innovative and dynamic academic careers for 40 faculty rooted in our constituent undergraduate programs--Geography, Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT), and Intelligence Analysis--along with growing graduate programs. For more information about our School and its programs, please visit: https://www.jmu.edu/cise/sis/ This posting focuses on the curricular needs of the IA program, which offers a multidisciplinary undergraduate degree preparing students to become analysts, with a specialization in intelligence analysis. The program teaches students to synthesize critical and creative thinking methods with technological tools for data collection, interpretation, and visualization in the production of analysis, frequently within a security context. Our program serves around 250 students, with important national and international partnerships providing opportunities for students to engage with real-world security challenges. Following a creative teacher-scholar model, a hallmark of our program is the meaningful involvement of undergraduate students in applied and scholarly work.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in a relevant academic field is preferred.
  • A minimum of a master’s degree with substantial, demonstrated experience as an analyst.
  • Applicants from any academic discipline (to include the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences) and/or any professional analytical background in the public or private sectors that enables them to speak with credibility about the process of doing analysis.
  • A commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, research, and one-on-one professional mentoring for future analysts.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Have the ability to incorporate technology in teaching and student research.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Completion of an I-9 form and present documentation of identity and eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Use of the E-Verify system to confirm identity and work authorization.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses that focus on applied technology (specifically data visualization for analysts), and specialty courses depending on the faculty member’s expertise potentially to include but not limited to: cyber security/cyber intelligence analysis; geospatial analysis; an introduction to and/or advanced courses in analysis in military, law enforcement, or private sector contexts; systems dynamics in applied security contexts; or professional skills in communicating analysis effectively to include verbally and visually/graphically.
  • A typical teaching load is three courses per semester in person.
  • Opportunities for creativity in curricular development as long as it supports the teaching of analysis.
