Virtual Propulsion Engineer - Thermal & Hydraulics

General Motors•Warren, MI
•Hybrid

About The Position

This hybrid position is based in Warren, Michigan, and requires the successful candidate to report to the location at least three times per week. The role is part of a collaborative team developing propulsion-related system models across thermal, hydraulic, lubrication, and ventilation domains. The engineer builds 1D fluid dynamics and coarse 3D thermal models to support design development and validation and to reduce hardware testing. Applications include battery cells and packs, drive units, electric motors, power electronics, combustion engines, and transmission-related systems. The engineer develops and integrates analytical models for electrified and conventional propulsion systems, provides design recommendations based on analyses, improves modeling practices and tools, collaborates with global propulsion and vehicle engineering teams, and supports technical problem-solving and efficiency improvements. Relocation benefits are available to candidates who qualify under company policy. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of experience with simulation, design, testing, or release of propulsion-related systems or hardware.
  • Experience with GT-SUITE, AMESIM, or similar software.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle propulsion system design, operation, or testing.
  • Ability to interpret analysis results and communicate technical recommendations.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, with coursework in heat transfer or fluid mechanics.
  • Experience with test-to-model correlation processes and variation analysis.
  • Experience with programming or scripting in Python, MATLAB, or similar software.
  • Experience with Siemens NX CAD modeling.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML methods or agentic workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize, build, and exercise analytical system-level models for electrified and conventional propulsion systems using 1D software tools such as GT-SUITE, AMESIM, MATLAB, Simulink, or similar.
  • Integrate plant models from different domains into larger system-level models capable of Software-in-the-Loop or Hardware-in-the-Loop co-simulation.
  • Provide component-level and system-level design recommendations to Design Responsible Engineers based on analysis results.
  • Contribute to improvements in analysis practices and tools to enhance prediction fidelity and execution speed.
  • Collaborate with analysis counterparts across VDDV teams representing global propulsion systems and vehicle engineering.
  • Participate in mentoring and knowledge-sharing activities with TCS India colleagues and new team members.
  • Support technical problem resolution by using simulation and analysis results.
  • Contribute to efficiency improvement projects, including developing automation tools using Python or MATLAB.

Benefits

  • Relocation benefits are available for candidates who qualify under company policy.
  • GM provides well-being support at work and at home; details are available through its Total Rewards resources.
