About The Position

The Virtual Propulsion Engineer performs cell-, module-, and pack-level structural analysis to support early design and verification of battery concepts, components, support systems, and vehicle integration. The role develops and conducts analyses and simulations to assess vibration, stiffness, stress, fatigue, durability, crash performance, safety, and manufacturing and assembly operations, while considering mass and manufacturing optimization. The engineer develops and coordinates battery structural verification activities, prepares CAD and material data for finite element analysis (FEA) model creation, and communicates findings to internal and external customers. The role also collaborates across engineering on design integration, proposals, problem solving, and system optimization; contributes requirements for advanced simulation improvements; and participates in benchmarking. The position follows a hybrid schedule of three days in the office and two days remote, and requires the employee to be able to report to a local office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field of study.
  • Two years of experience as an Application Engineer, Senior Project Development Engineer, CAE Engineer, or in a related occupation.
  • Two years of experience with model creation and FEA analysis.
  • Two years of experience in structural engineering, materials, and large-scale nonlinear problems.
  • Two years of experience with ABAQUS (Implicit, Explicit, ABAQUS CAE), ANSYS Workbench, ANSA, Hypermesh, iSIGHT, NASTRAN, Optistruct, and GENESIS.
  • Two years of experience with UG NX.
  • Two years of experience applying FEA tools to battery- or propulsion-related systems.
  • Must be able to report to a local office.

Responsibilities

  • Perform cell-, module-, and pack-level structural analysis for early design and verification of battery concepts, components, support systems, and vehicle integration.
  • Provide vibration, stiffness, stress, fatigue, durability, crash, and safety results while minimizing mass penalty and optimizing manufacturing.
  • Conduct shape, size, and topology optimization.
  • Develop and conduct manufacturing and assembly operation simulations from cell to module to pack.
  • Develop and coordinate battery structural verification activities.
  • Prepare CAD and material data as needed for FEA model creation.
  • Communicate findings effectively to internal and external customers using appropriate media.
  • Meet or exceed deadlines for structured product development timelines, quality, and cost.
  • Collaborate with the broader engineering team on design integration, new proposals, problem solving, and system optimization.
  • Provide requirements for improvements to advanced simulation activities.
  • Participate in benchmarking activities.

Benefits

  • GM describes its benefits as supporting employee well-being at work and at home.
