Video Processing Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

Apple’s Architecture group connects hardware and software into a unified system. This role investigates video-processing approaches that balance quality and power by combining machine-learning techniques with traditional, lower-compute methods. The goal is to identify operating points that use machine learning when it improves quality and fall back to traditional methods when appropriate, improving video quality and/or battery life on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The engineer investigates hybrid video-processing techniques and translates them into efficient system-on-chip (SoC) architectures, specifications, and C-models. Example application areas include Under Display Camera enhancement, motion estimation for Codec, GGM and MCTF, and Face ID processing. The role collaborates cross-functionally with other architects and with Design, Verification, and software teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Ability to program in Python, PyTorch, and/or C/C++.
  • Understanding of image, video, or signal-processing fundamentals.
  • Understanding of neural-network fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop new image- or video-processing algorithms.
  • Communication skills and ability to work across various groups.
  • Understanding of fixed-point representation and processing and/or ability to write bit-accurate software models.
  • Understanding of pipelining and pixel-processing architectures.
  • Knowledge of computer-architecture fundamentals.
  • Master’s or PhD degree, or 3+ years of experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing neural-network-based image- or video-processing algorithms.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and develop hybrid video-processing architectures.
  • Support chip architecture and software teams in mapping algorithms into well-defined architectures implementable in software and/or hardware.
  • Generate architecture test vectors for quality validation.
  • Write bit-exact C-models of defined architectures.
  • Support Design and Verification teams in verifying designs against bit-exact C-models.
