The individual in this role will report directly to AssetMark’s Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy & Corporate Development and will partner with sales, corporate development, finance, legal/compliance, and operations, helping support AssetMark’s Succession offering. This is a full-time position. We will only consider candidates for this position who can accommodate a hybrid work schedule and are close to our office locations in either Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL or Concord, CA. Responsibilities: AssetMark is seeking a highly skilled senior individual to serve as the VP, Business Development Officer - Advisor Succession reporting to the AssetMark’s Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy & Corporate Development. The Vice President, Business Development Officer – Advisor Succession will facilitate advisor succession and acquisition activity by connecting advisors who are looking to sell all or part of their practice with advisors and partner firms seeking growth through acquisition. The VP will build trusted relationships with advisors on both sides of the transaction - those planning an exit or transition and those pursuing inorganic growth to expand their practice and increase share of wallet. This role will leverage a formal matchmaking platform to align buyers and sellers based on strategic, cultural, and financial fit, while advising participants on valuation expectations, deal structures, and practice readiness. In addition, the VP will manage and grow relationships with partner firms that serve as potential acquirers, transition destinations, or strategic buyers of advisor practices. The role will actively support transaction execution by coordinating across sales, finance, legal, and compliance teams to advance opportunities from introduction through close, including valuation analysis, LOI development, diligence support, and transition planning. With strong market insight and executive presence, the VP will help advisors identify attractive acquisition opportunities, guide them through complex negotiations, and ensure successful outcomes that drive advisor growth, asset retention, and long-term platform engagement.

Requirements

  • Integrated Cross-Functional Leadership : Deep expertise working across sales, corporate development, finance, legal/compliance, and operations to structure and execute complex advisor succession and acquisition transactions.
  • Advisor Relationship Origination & Trust Building : Proven ability to establish, grow, and sustain trusted relationships with senior advisors and practice owners, serving as a long-term strategic partner through emotionally and financially complex succession decisions.
  • Strategic Matchmaking & Deal Structuring : Demonstrated experience formally matching buyers and sellers based on cultural, operational, and financial fit, including minority sales, phased transitions, tuck-ins, and full practice exits.
  • Partner Firm Relationship Management : Ability to build, manage, and expand strategic relationships with preferred partner firms and acquirers, positioning the platform as a primary source of high-quality acquisition opportunities.
  • Valuation & Financial Acumen : Strong valuation expertise across advisory business models, including assessment of appropriate revenue, EBITDA, and cash-flow multiples; ability to coach advisors on value drivers, deal readiness, and optimization.
  • M&A Transaction Advisory Experience : Experience guiding stakeholders through end-to-end transaction processes, including LOI negotiation, due diligence, deal economics, earn-outs, retention structures, and transition planning.
  • Platform & Ecosystem Development : Ability to scale and evolve a structured succession and matchmaking platform, including process design, partner onboarding, data inputs, and feedback loops to improve match quality and velocity.
  • Executive Presence & Stakeholder Management : Strong executive presence with the credibility to engage C-suite leaders, firm founders, compliance executives, and legal counsel in high-stakes discussions.
  • Market Insight & Thought Leadership : Deep understanding of advisor succession trends, consolidation dynamics, buyer appetite, and regulatory considerations, with the ability to position the firm as a thought leader in advisor transitions.
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of 10–15 years of experience in business development, advisor services, M&A, succession planning, corporate development, or financial services, with demonstrated experience supporting practice acquisitions or transitions.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US to be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MBA or equivalent) strongly preferred , with focus in finance, strategy, or business management.
  • Prior experience working with advisors, RIAs, broker-dealers, or wealth management firms strongly preferred , including hands-on involvement in valuation discussions, deal structuring, and transaction execution.
