About The Position

Essentia Health is hiring a Vice President, Administrator to lead St. Joseph’s Medical Center, a nationally recognized 162-bed regional hospital, and oversee clinics across the Brainerd Lakes Area. As Essentia’s senior leader in the region, this role will help expand services, bring care closer to home, and develop innovative care models—including virtual care—in partnership with physicians, clinical leaders, and colleagues across the health system. The position works with an experienced local team and leverages systemwide expertise and best practices while adapting them when that better serves patients.

The administrator owns regional budget and operating results in partnership with a finance partner. Nursing and ambulatory leadership report to the role. The leader represents Essentia in the community, develops local relationships and civic involvement, maintains a good working relationship with labor partners alongside Human Resources, and hires and develops directors and managers. The role reports to Essentia’s Senior Vice President of Operations.

This is an on-site position in Brainerd, Minnesota. Essentia expects the administrator to live in the Brainerd Lakes Area and be an active community leader. No certification or licensure is required.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in health care administration, business administration, or a related field.
• Five or more years of progressive health care management experience at the director level or above in hospital or clinic operations.
• Executive experience leading a hospital, multiple sites, or a service line, with results in finance, operations, and quality.
• Strong understanding of health care finance, including P&L responsibility.
• Track record of working with physician leaders to get things done.
• Experience leading change and making it last.

Nice To Haves

• Seven or more years of progressive leadership, including multi-site or market integration experience.
• Experience as an administrator, president, COO, or VP at a regional or rural hospital that is part of a larger health system.
• Experience in a highly matrixed health system.
• Experience growing services or launching new care models, including virtual care.
• Board, civic, or foundation involvement.
• Experience in a union environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead St. Joseph’s Medical Center and the Brainerd Lakes Area clinics.
• Oversee nursing and ambulatory leadership.
• Own the region’s budget and operating results in partnership with a finance partner.
• Apply Essentia’s systemwide expertise and best practices through integration, collaboration, and thoughtful local adaptation.
• Grow services in Brainerd and Baxter so more patients can receive care close to home.
• Partner with physicians and clinical leaders to design and implement innovative care models, including virtual care, to expand access, reduce barriers, and help patients receive appropriate care sooner.
• Represent Essentia in the community, including serving on the chamber board, participating in service clubs, working with Foundation donors, and building a local Director’s Council.
• Maintain a good working relationship with labor partners in collaboration with Human Resources.
• Hire and develop directors and managers and encourage their community involvement.
