About The Position

VEG is offering a Veterinary Technician Student Externship Program designed to provide a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. Students will work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians, engaging in patient triage, diagnostics, inpatient care, and more. This program allows students to gain practical experience in a fast-paced ER environment, explore their passion for emergency medicine, and determine if it aligns with their future career goals. VEG is committed to fostering a supportive and educational environment for future veterinary professionals.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
  • Enrolled in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
  • Able to start the program within six months of application.
  • Current rabies vaccination or titer required.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
  • Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment with diverse people.
  • Empathetic and people-centric approach.
  • Sense of humility, acknowledging mistakes, sharing credit, and lifting up team accomplishments.
  • Strong sense of ownership over work, taking responsibility for outcomes.
  • Curious by nature, asking insightful questions and seeking opportunities to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Learn from experienced emergency veterinary professionals.
  • Receive real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning from a paired credentialed veterinary technician.
  • Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
  • Practice skills required by school proficiency checklists with mentorship.
  • Experience the teamwork, pace, and dedication of emergency care at VEG.
