About The Position

VEG is offering a Veterinary Technician Student Externship Program designed to provide a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. This program allows students to work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians, engaging in patient triage, diagnostics, inpatient care, and more. It's an opportunity to gain practical skills, understand the realities of emergency medicine, and explore career paths within the field. VEG is committed to fostering a supportive and educational environment for future veterinary professionals.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
  • Enrolled in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
  • Able to start the program within six months of application.
  • Current rabies vaccination or titer required.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 kg on own and able to support up to 40 kg with assistance.
  • Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment with diverse people.

Responsibilities

  • Learn from experienced emergency veterinary professionals.

  • Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
  • Practice skills required by your school’s proficiency checklist with mentorship and guidance.
