Overnight Veterinary Assistant
About The Position
Animal Emergency Center of Yorktown is an emergency and urgent care hospital in Yorktown, Virginia, seeking a part-time Veterinary Assistant for overnight shifts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 11:45 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. The assistant supports veterinarians and the hospital team in caring for emergency, urgent-care, and hospitalized patients. The practice describes its team as experienced and supportive, with opportunities for hands-on and virtual training and continuing development. The role involves patient restraint, triage, laboratory sample collection and analysis, diagnostic imaging, nursing care, medication administration, client communication, surgical assistance, and anesthetic management. The position pays starting at $16 per hour, depending on experience.
Requirements
- At least one year of experience as a Veterinary Assistant.
- Ability to work overnight shifts.
- Compassionate, calm, and able to work as a team player.
- Ability to multitask.
- Ability to properly restrain pets.
- Strong communication skills.
- Self-starter with a desire to continue advancing knowledge and skills.
- Ability to withstand unpleasant odors and noises and potential exposure to bites, scratches, animal waste, and potentially contagious diseases.
Nice To Haves
- Previous emergency or urgent-care experience is preferred but not required.
- Proficiency in sample collection, obtaining medical histories, processing laboratory tests, and radiographs is a bonus.
Responsibilities
- Restrain pets appropriately.
- Triage incoming patients.
- Collect and analyze laboratory samples.
- Perform diagnostic imaging.
- Manage and provide nursing care for medical and hospitalized cases with varying degrees of stability.
- Administer medications.
- Communicate treatment plans effectively to clients.
- Prepare for and assist with surgery.
- Manage anesthesia.
