The Washington State Patrol Criminal Investigation Division’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Program works to detect and recover stolen motor vehicles and stolen vehicle parts, return them to their rightful owners, deter auto theft, and reduce the trade of stolen vehicles and major component parts in Washington State. The VIN Officer supports this mission by inspecting and verifying the identity of non-owner-retained salvage or rebuilt vehicles, assembled vehicles, and vehicles referred by the Department of Licensing before a Washington registration or certificate of title is issued. The position also assists WSP and allied law enforcement with identifying suspected stolen vehicles and major component parts. The position involves inspecting vehicles, using tools to stamp and affix VINs and VIN plates, entering information into databases, and safely processing materials to restore altered or obliterated identifiers. It also includes customer service, appointment scheduling, responding to inquiries, and adjusting inspection schedules. The work takes place indoors and outdoors in an environment typical of a mechanic-style garage, with possible exposure to chemicals, oils, solvents, slips, trips, falls, overhead impacts, falling items, and hazards related to crawling under vehicles and operating power tools. Some travel is required based on business needs and training.
