About The Position

This position is for a Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Ygnacio Valley High. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and standards for athletic team coaches in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. Knowledge, training, and demonstrated competency in specific areas are required. Non-certificated personnel must also meet additional requirements. All coaches are expected to adhere to a Code of Ethical Conduct.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and competency related to care and prevention of athletic injuries, basic first aid, and emergency procedures (evidenced by completion of a college-level course and possession of a valid CPR card, OR a valid sports injury certificate/first aid card and a valid CPR card, OR a valid EMT I or II card).
  • Knowledgeable in coaching theory and techniques in basketball (evidenced by completion of a college course in coaching theory/techniques of the specific sport, OR completion of in-service programs, OR prior services as a student coach/assistant coach in the sport, OR prior participation in organized competitive athletics at the high school level or above in the sport).
  • Training and knowledge of the rules and regulations in basketball, including North Coast Section, league rules, and California Interscholastic Federation rules, and demonstrated ability to communicate them effectively and respectfully.
  • Knowledge of child or adolescent psychology as it relates to sports participation (evidenced by completion of a college-level course in child psychology or sports psychology, OR completion of a seminar/workshop on human growth and development of youth, OR prior active involvement with youth in school or community sports program).
  • For non-certificated personnel: Not convicted of offenses referred to in Education Code 44010, 44011 or 44424, or any offense involving moral turpitude or evidencing unfitness to associate with children.
  • For non-certificated personnel: Free from tuberculosis and any other contagious disease that would prohibit certificated teachers from teaching, as verified by a written statement (renewable every four years) from a licensed physician or approved person.
  • For non-certificated personnel: No authority to give grades to students.
  • For non-certificated personnel: Shall not assume coaching duties/responsibilities prior to the District receiving fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge, training, and competency to ensure compliance with the Code of Ethical Conduct.

Responsibilities

  • Coach the Varsity Girls Basketball team.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competency in the care and prevention of athletic injuries, basic first aid, and emergency procedures.
  • Be knowledgeable in coaching theory and techniques specific to basketball.
  • Understand and communicate the rules and regulations of basketball, including those from the North Coast Section, league rules, and the California Interscholastic Federation.
  • Apply knowledge of child or adolescent psychology as it relates to sports participation.
  • Adhere to the Code of Ethical Conduct, showing respect for players, officials, other coaches, and parents.
  • Establish and model fair play, sportsmanship, and proper conduct.
  • Prioritize player safety and welfare.
  • Provide an environment that instills teamwork, commitment, and discipline.
  • Provide leadership that promotes a positive experience for the student athlete.
  • Provide proper supervision of students at all times.
  • Use discretion when providing constructive criticism and reprimanding players.
  • Maintain consistency in requiring all players to adhere to established rules and standards.
  • Properly instruct players in the safe use of equipment.
  • Avoid exerting undue influence on a student's decision to enroll in an athletic program at any postsecondary institution.
  • Avoid exerting undue influence on students to take lighter academic courses for athletic eligibility.
  • Avoid suggesting, providing, or encouraging the use of unapproved substances to increase physical development or performance.
  • Avoid recruitment of athletes from other schools.
  • Work effectively with Booster groups.
  • Work effectively with school administration.
