About The Position

The Assistant Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Marion High School is responsible for developing and promoting the basketball program. This role involves organizing practices, managing equipment, ensuring student safety and eligibility, and collaborating with various stakeholders to foster a successful and ethical athletic department. The coach will also play a role in program development from 7th to 12th grade and continuous improvement of coaching staff.

Requirements

  • Must possess a Coaching Endorsement or Coaching Authorization as mandated by the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Board of Educational Examiners, Iowa High School Athletic Association, and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Responsibilities

  • Organizing, conducting, and evaluating daily practices.
  • Maintaining, inventory, and periodic safety checks of equipment, supplies, and facilities.
  • Supervising locker rooms and facilities until all students leave.
  • Assuring necessary medical attention and working with the Trainer on prevention and rehabilitation programs.
  • Determining program needs for budgeting.
  • Attending all necessary conference meetings (if applicable).
  • Attending all required Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and/or Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) meetings and submitting all required paperwork.
  • Arranging the end-of-season banquet (encouraged).
  • Scouting (if warrants).
  • Assisting the Booster Club with specific needs for the activity.
  • Conducting staff meetings as needed.
  • Checking academic progress and eligibility of participants according to school and league rules.
  • Establishing and enforcing all regulations of the school district and athletic associations, including informing participants of policies.
  • Promoting the activity through announcements, newsletters, etc.
  • Conducting self in a sportsmanlike manner while modeling and promoting high ideals of sportsmanship.
  • Communicating throughout the year with the Activities Director regarding program development, staff, and team.
  • Providing leadership and program development for a sequential 7-12 program.
  • Promoting the sport within youth programs (encouraged).
  • Informing participants of lettering and special award criteria and informing the Activities Office which athletes receive these awards.
  • Aiding the Activities Director in establishing a schedule.
  • Continuous development, improvement, and evaluation of Assistant Coaches (9-12).
  • Attending clinics and reading literature to stay abreast of changes in the activity.
  • Supplying the Activities Director with forms, team information, season summary, and statistics.
  • Acting as the historian for the sport, collecting and updating individual and team records.
  • Communicating with administration, faculty, Activities Director, parents, students, and staff members.
  • Modeling the highest level of integrity and ethical behavior.
  • Knowing the rules of the sport.
  • Developing philosophies that guide program development.
  • Assisting in establishing goals for the program, team, and individuals and developing strategies to achieve them.
  • Working hard, being positive, and being on time.
