UX/UI Designer

AJAIA•New York, NY
•$10,000 - $14,000•Remote

About The Position

Ajaia is hiring a hands-on Digital Product Designer to lead discovery and design for client engagements and Ajaia’s own product suite. The role involves interviewing and observing people doing their work, translating research into user journeys, wireframes, and build-ready prototypes, and testing designs with real users before production code is written. The designer will maintain the design standard across Ajaia’s products and stay involved during implementation to help ensure the delivered product matches the design intent. AI tools are a core part of daily work, including research, synthesis, wireframing, and prototyping. The designer is expected to assess AI-generated work, use current design and prototyping tools, and step in to refine or rebuild work when needed. The role is fully remote, with discovery, user testing, and collaboration with clients and engineers conducted online. No minimum years of experience are required; candidates are evaluated on their work. Compensation is $10,000 to $14,000 base, depending on experience, plus a performance bonus of up to 100% of base salary.

Requirements

  • Ability to independently conduct discovery, interviews, usability testing, and behavioral-data analysis.
  • Ability to move quickly from research synthesis to a working prototype.
  • Ability to design human checkpoints into workflows.
  • Comfort holding a position when evidence conflicts with stakeholder expectations.
  • Daily fluency with AI tools for research, synthesis, and prototyping, including the ability to distinguish useful output from poor-quality output.
  • Comfort working directly with engineers during implementation.
  • Comfort conducting interviews and user testing over video in a fully remote setting.

Nice To Haves

  • A public portfolio or case studies available for review.
  • Experience designing AI-native workflows, including deciding where human checkpoints belong.
  • Consulting, agency, or professional services experience with concurrent clients.
  • Comfort with lightweight front-end implementation.
  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Run discovery for client engagements by interviewing and observing people doing the work, including through screen-sharing.
  • Conduct research with users of Ajaia’s own products.
  • Synthesize findings to distinguish users’ underlying needs from their stated requests and support conclusions with evidence.
  • Design user journeys, wireframes, and prototypes that engineers can build from without guessing.
  • Identify where human sign-off is needed in a workflow and design those checkpoints into the product.
  • Test designs with real users before production code is written.
  • Challenge stakeholder feature requests when research evidence points to a different solution and explain the reasoning clearly.
  • Maintain a consistent design standard across Ajaia’s product suite.
  • Use AI tools as a default for prototyping, research, and synthesis, while judging when their output needs refinement or rebuilding.
  • Hand off design work in a state engineers can begin implementing and remain involved during the build to catch deviations from the design intent.
  • Run interviews, usability testing, and analysis of behavioral data.

Benefits

  • Performance bonus of up to 100% of base salary.
  • Competitive benefits.
