About The Position

Under supervision, perform labor in construction, maintenance, operations, and installation of Public Works and Public Utilities. This role involves making sewer pipe taps, repairs, and installation of pipes and manholes. The position also includes maintaining facilities, painting, mowing, laying brick and cement, and performing minor building construction work. Additionally, the Utility Worker is responsible for minor repairs and maintenance of equipment and vehicles, using good judgment to work safely and properly use equipment, and wearing protective equipment when needed. The role requires the ability to follow oral and written instructions, keep written records, make reports, communicate with the public and other agencies, and possess a strong sense of customer service. Other duties include counting parts, assisting in inventory, cleaning around city facilities, collecting samples, repairing and posting signs, loading brush, working in trenches and confined spaces, and assisting in cleaning sludge drying beds when needed. The employee may be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma with one (1) year minimum experience required in a related field.
• Ability to demonstrate proper techniques and uses of a variety of hand tools and power tools.
• Ability to read addresses, signs, and directions.
• Skill in good interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work with a wide range of people.
• Skill in dependability through good attendance and adhere to timelines and schedules.
• Ability to take initiative in development and completion of projects.
• Lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
• Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
• Visual ability: sufficient to effectively operate office equipment including copier, computer, etc.; and to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, etc.
• Hearing ability: sufficient to hold a conversation with other individuals both in person and over a telephone; and to hear recording on transcription device.
• Speaking ability: sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person and over the telephone.

Responsibilities
