About The Position

The Utility Worker is responsible for performing various tasks to ensure the kitchen and dining areas are clean, sanitary, and well-stocked. This includes sweeping and mopping floors, pulling trash, washing pots and pans, operating the dish machine, putting away dishes, and performing deep cleaning as needed. The role also involves ensuring sanitation standards are met effectively and efficiently. Additionally, the Utility Worker plays a role in patient meal service, including setting up and serving trays, delivering meal carts, assisting patients with menu selections, and collecting dirty trays. They are also responsible for responding to patient and staff requests, practicing safe work procedures, and maintaining a professional demeanor.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • Good communication/interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to read English with understanding and write English legibly
  • Must be able to relate to patients, parents, relatives, and hospital and dietary personnel in a helpful, service oriented manner
  • Must be able to lift, deliver, and pick up an average of sixty (60) patient trays twice per day within a predetermined time span
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with Registered Dietitians, hospital personnel, and other Food and Nutrition Services personnel in order to provide the best possible nutritional care for patients
  • Must receive an annual influenza vaccine as a condition of employment

Responsibilities

  • Sweeping or mopping the floors
  • Pulling trash and emptying in the dumpster
  • Washing pots and pans
  • Breaking down soiled carts & running dishes through the dish machine
  • Putting dishes away in the kitchen
  • Performing other deep cleaning needed throughout the kitchen
  • Ensuring that sanitation is met in an effective and efficient manner of service
  • Maintaining floor kitchen with well stocked floor supplies and keeping the area neat, clean and sanitary
  • On assigned unit, rotating and inventorying floor supplies using appropriate requisition with par levels
  • Discarding opened unlabeled containers, and outdated food and beverage
  • Damp wiping counter tops and cabinets surfaces daily
  • Developing working relationship with housekeeping to keep kitchens looking neat, clean, and orderly throughout day
  • Obtaining floor supplies needed to maintain par level on assigned unit
  • Labeling and dating all perishable supplies
  • Putting supplies on top of clean kitchen cart
  • Signing and dating completed requisition and turning into diet office
  • Delivering supplies to assigned floor kitchen prior to service of lunch for patients
  • Providing patients with quality meal service
  • Setting-up and serving patient trays in accordance with established schedule and procedures
  • Assisting in checking tray for accuracy, temperature, and appearance
  • Delivering tray carts to assigned floors
  • Informing nursing station when trays are ready to be passed
  • Passing trays to patient's room or bedside, greeting each in a friendly manner and checking name on bed against name of menu
  • After tray distribution, beginning meal visitation to ensure that patients are enjoying meals and have everything they desire
  • Observing and reporting any unnecessary trays being sent
  • Collecting dirty trays from patients and placing in tray carts
  • Returning tray carts to dish room
  • Keeping tray cart neat and clean at all times
  • Delivering patient snacks as necessary
  • Providing patients with the opportunity to choose their meal preferences by making appropriate menus available to them
  • Obtaining patient menus and patient diet list from diet office
  • Passing menus and assisting patients as needed with menu selections
  • Checking each menu for proper placement of name, room and bed number
  • Using diet list to check off menus received and to note comments
  • Collecting menus from patients and returning same to diet office in an efficient manner
  • Informing supervisor of transfer, discharges, new admissions and special patient requests
  • Responding to patient, visitor, and Hospital personnel requests and concerns
  • Maintaining a professional and polite demeanor at all times
  • Responding to requests and concerns as soon as you are notified in a helpful manner
  • Informing supervisors of any requests you cannot complete or have questions or concerns
  • Informing the concerned parts when the task is completed
  • Furnishing parents/visitors and hospital personnel with Patient Service Manager's telephone extension or beeper if they wish to speak to directly with management & informing Patient Service Manager of such
  • Practicing safe work procedures
  • Wearing department uniform at all times; wearing personal protective gear as necessary
  • Reporting accidents immediately
  • Practicing safe lifting techniques
  • Practicing proper equipment handling
  • Maintaining established department policy for safety, environmental and infection control
  • Detecting and reporting faulty or defective supplies or equipment
  • Practicing safe food handling procedures
  • Attending meetings as required, in services, and participating on committees as directed
  • Performing other related duties as assigned
