About The Position

This role involves performing field customer service duties, including connecting new water services, closing accounts, delivering delinquency notices, and turning off services for delinquent accounts. The technician will also place locks on services, remove meters, and restore services upon payment. Responsibilities include completing service orders for accurate billing, repairing leaks at the meter, examining meters for tampering, and reporting inoperative or damaged meters. The role also involves reporting water theft, locating service addresses, checking meters for issues, and answering general customer questions about meter readings. Additionally, the technician will perform water meter exchanges, installations, and repairs for meters up to 2 inches, and maintain meter boxes and lids. Installation, repair, and replacement of automatic meter reading components (MIU or register) are also part of the duties. The position requires performing other assigned duties to ensure efficient operations and maintaining all necessary licenses, certifications, and clearances without interruption. Compliance with the assigned schedule and the City's timekeeping and attendance policy is mandatory.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Valid Texas driver's license and good driving record.
  • May require moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; kneeling, crouching and bending; pushing, pulling and reaching; and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • May require working in inclement weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
  • Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform customer service duties in the field, including new water service connects and closing out accounts.
  • Deliver delinquency notices.
  • Turn off services for delinquent accounts.
  • Place locks on services and/or remove meters.
  • Restore services to delinquent accounts after payment by removing locks or reinstalling meters.
  • Complete service order requests and submit to ensure accurate billing.
  • Respond to and repair leaks at the meter.
  • Examine meters for signs of tampering and report inoperative, leaking, malfunctioning, or damaged meters and registers.
  • Report any water theft as discovered to supervisors.
  • Locate service addresses and check meters of various sizes for stuck dials and inoperable parts, and verify meter information.
  • Answer customers' questions of a general nature on meter readings or direct them to the Water Billing Office.
  • Perform water meter exchanges, installations and repairs for water meters (5/8" to 2").
  • Clean out, raise or lower and replace meter boxes and/or lids.
  • Install, repair and replace meter reading components of water meters used in the automatic meter reading system (meter interface unit (MIU) or register).
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective operations.
  • Maintain all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements without interruption.
  • Work the assigned schedule and comply with City timekeeping and attendance policy.
