About The Position

Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator in Des Plaines, Illinois. The company has protected underground utility infrastructure since 2001 and performs utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects nationwide. This role involves locating underground utilities in compliance with 811 dig laws and using advanced technology and proven methods to provide accurate results. The position is full-time and employee-based, with a stated pay range of $20.00–$30.00 per hour. Locators are paid door to door and have independence in their assigned work area, with operational support from the company.

The successful candidate is self-motivated and able to work independently, communicate effectively, and maintain accuracy and safety. The role requires work in all weather conditions, maintenance of company equipment and vehicles, willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules, and participation in an on-call rotation.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of utility locating experience is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to pass a drug screen.
• Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
• Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
• Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
• Consistent attendance and punctuality.
• Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

• Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
• Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
• Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
• Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
• Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
• Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
• Participate in an on-call rotation.
• Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
• Communicate with excavators, property owners, and team members.
