About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator in Skokie, Illinois. The company has protected underground utility infrastructure since 2001 and performs utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects nationwide. The role involves locating underground utilities in compliance with 811 laws, using advanced locating technology and multiple locating methods, and producing accurate documentation. The position is full-time, with an hourly pay range of $20.00–$30.00. The locator works independently in an assigned area, communicates with excavators, property owners, and team members, and participates in an on-call rotation. Applicants must be prepared to work in all weather conditions, travel, and work overtime and flexible schedules.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to work independently without supervision.
- Ability to maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.

- Experience working with modern locating technology and multiple locating methods.
- Experience with utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members.
- Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality.
