About The Position

Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator for its Locate Services Division in Des Plaines, Illinois. The company has protected underground utility infrastructure since 2001 and performs utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects nationwide. This full-time employee position offers a salary range of $20.00 to $30.00 per hour. Locators work independently in an assigned area, with operational support and modern locating technology. The role requires working in all weather conditions, maintaining company equipment and vehicles, communicating effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members, and participating in an on-call rotation. Overtime, flexible schedules, and travel are part of the role.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of utility locating experience.
• Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to pass a drug screen.
• Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
• Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
• Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
• Consistent attendance and punctuality.
• Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members.

Responsibilities

• Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
• Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
• Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
• Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
• Document work, including photos and reports, using a mobile app.
• Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
• Participate in an on-call rotation.
• Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
