Utility Locator (Mellen, WI)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator to locate underground utilities and help protect utility infrastructure. The company has operated since 2001 and works nationwide on utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects. The role involves working independently in an assigned territory, complying with 811 dig laws, documenting work, and communicating with excavators, property owners, and team members. Employees must be willing to work in all weather conditions, maintain company equipment and vehicles, participate in an on-call rotation, and work overtime and flexible schedules. The position is full-time, with a stated preferred minimum of two years of utility locating experience.
Requirements
- Minimum of two years of utility locating experience is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locate practices.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
- Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently and without supervision.
- Willingness to travel.

Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with all 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
- Document work using a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Work independently in an assigned work area.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members.
- Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
