Utility Locator (Mellen, WI)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is seeking an experienced Utility Locator to locate underground utilities and help protect utility infrastructure. The company has operated since 2001 and works nationwide on utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects. This role offers independence in an assigned territory while providing operational support and modern locating technology. The Utility Locator uses electronic equipment and multiple locating methods, interprets utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data, and marks utilities with paint and flags. The role also includes documenting work and excavation-related utility damages, participating in an on-call rotation, and communicating with excavators, property owners, and team members. The position requires outdoor work in all weather conditions, care of company equipment and vehicles, and willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions.

- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently without supervision.
Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with applicable 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Accurately mark utilities using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members.
