About The Position

Northern Lights Locating and Inspection, Inc. is seeking a full-time Utility Locator in Huber Heights, Ohio. The company provides utility locating and inspection services, including underground utility locating, sewer imaging, and inspection work. Locators work independently in their assigned areas with support available and participate in an on-call rotation.

The role locates underground utilities for clients and property owners based on 811 tickets and applicable dig laws. It uses utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, GIS information, and pipe and electronic locating equipment. Locators mark utilities with flags and/or paint, document completed work and issues, photograph located utility lines for each ticket, and investigate and write detailed documentation about excavations that damage underground utilities. A cell phone-based app is used to record locating marks, photos, and required documents.

Requirements

• Know utility locating best practices, procedures, and 811 law.
• Read and interpret utility maps and as-built civil engineering drawings.
• Locate underground utilities using multiple locating methods.
• Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
• Be able to work in all weather conditions.
• Be willing to travel 75% or more.
• Have troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Pass a drug screen.
• Have a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain DOT physical certification.
• Be available to work varying schedules and overtime.
• Be self-motivated and able to learn quickly.
• Be team-oriented and demonstrate exemplary character.
• Be safety-focused.
• Maintain a tobacco-free vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Locate underground utilities for clients and property owners based on 811 tickets and applicable 811 dig laws.
• Use utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, GIS information, and pipe and electronic locating equipment.
• Mark underground utilities using flags and/or paint.
• Prepare reports, forms, and memos documenting completed work and problems encountered or resolved.
• Take photographs of located utility lines for each 811 ticket.
• Investigate and prepare detailed written documentation about excavations resulting in damage to underground utilities.
• Use a cell phone-based app to record locating marks, photos, and required documentation.
• Maintain provided equipment and vehicles in clean and good operating condition.
• Maintain small- to medium-sized equipment and trucks.
• Complete paperwork and documentation.
• Communicate and interact with coworkers, supervisors, and the public to exchange information and receive work direction.
• Participate in an on-call rotation.
• Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
