About The Position

Northern Lights Locating and Inspection, Inc. is hiring a full-time Utility Locator to protect utility networks by locating underground utilities for clients and property owners based on 811 tickets and dig laws. The role uses utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, GIS information, and pipe and electronic locating equipment. Locators mark utilities with flags and/or paint and use a cell phone-based app to record marks, take photos, and complete required documentation for excavators and property owners. The position also involves preparing reports, forms, and memos about completed work and problems encountered or resolved, and investigating and documenting excavations that damage underground utilities. Locators maintain provided equipment and vehicles, participate in an on-call rotation, and may travel more than 75%. The role requires working in all weather conditions, maintaining regular attendance, and being available for varying schedules and overtime. Northern Lights describes its locators as working independently in their areas with a support system available.

Requirements

Knowledge of utility locating best practices, procedures, and 811 law.
Ability to read and interpret utility maps and as-built civil engineering drawings.
Ability to locate underground utilities using multiple locating methods.
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to complete paperwork and documentation.
Ability to communicate and use interpersonal skills to exchange information and receive work direction.
Ability to work in all weather conditions.
Willingness to travel more than 75%.
Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Must be able to pass a drug screen.
Must have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain DOT physical certification.
Must be available to work varying schedules and overtime.
Must maintain a tobacco-free vehicle.

Responsibilities

Locate underground utilities for clients and property owners based on 811 tickets and applicable 811 dig laws.
Use utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, GIS information, and pipe and electronic locating equipment.
Mark underground utility locations with flags and/or paint.
Use a cell phone-based app to record locating marks, take photos, and complete locate documentation.
Prepare reports, forms, and memos documenting completed work and problems encountered or resolved.
Investigate and prepare detailed written documentation about excavations that damage underground utilities.
Maintain the cleanliness and operating condition of provided equipment and vehicles.
Maintain small- to medium-sized equipment and trucks.
Participate in an on-call rotation.
Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
