About The Position

Northern Lights Locating and Inspection, Inc. is hiring a full-time Utility Locator to protect underground utility networks. The role locates underground utilities for clients and property owners based on 811 tickets and applicable dig laws. Locators work independently in their assigned areas with support available, and participate in an on-call rotation. The position requires travel of 75% or more and work in all weather conditions. The role uses utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, GIS information, and pipe and electronic locating equipment. Locators mark utility locations with flags and/or paint, photograph each located utility line, and use a cellphone-based app to record marks and complete documentation for clients, excavators, and property owners. The job also includes preparing reports, forms, and memos; documenting problems encountered or resolved; and investigating and preparing detailed written documentation about excavations that damage underground utilities. Requirements

Know best locating practices, procedures, and 811 law.
Read and interpret utility maps and as-built civil engineering drawings.
Locate underground utilities using multiple methods.
Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Complete paperwork and documentation.
Communicate and use interpersonal skills to exchange or convey information and receive work direction.
Pay attention to detail.
Be able to work in all weather conditions.
Be willing to travel 75% or more.
Have excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Pass a drug screen.
Have a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain DOT physical certification.
Be available to work varying schedules and overtime.
Maintain a tobacco-free vehicle.

Responsibilities

Locate underground utilities for clients and property owners based on 811 tickets and applicable dig laws.
Use utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, GIS information, and pipe and electronic locating equipment.
Mark underground utility locations using flags and/or paint.
Take pictures of located utility lines for each 811 ticket.
Use a cellphone-based app to record locating marks and complete required documents.
Prepare reports, forms, and memos documenting completed work and problems encountered or resolved.
Investigate and prepare detailed written documentation on excavations that damage underground utilities.
Maintain provided equipment and vehicles in clean, good operating condition.
Maintain small- to medium-sized equipment and trucks.
Participate in an on-call rotation.
Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
