About The Position

The City of Bellevue, WA is currently accepting online applications for two three-year limited term Maintenance Worker positions located in the Operations and Maintenance Division of Bellevue Utilities Department. This is an opportunity for successful candidates to develop working-level skills in Water Maintenance operations. Unlike our entry-level Maintenance Aide positions, the Maintenance Worker (LTE) is expected to develop and perform the full range of skilled maintenance tasks performed by permanent staff, with two exceptions: this position is not required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), and it is not included in the 24-hour standby rotation. Over the three-year term, incumbents will be trained to perform all core duties of a skilled maintenance worker in the Water Maintenance section. A majority of the work is repetitive in nature and performed under direct supervision, particularly during early-stage training. Supervision requirements may decrease as proficiency increases, though work will continue to be performed cooperatively with other employees and completed in a manner that assures individual, co-worker, and public safety in all weather and working conditions. Work may also be performed independently on the basis of clear instructions and standard operating procedures. Work is to be completed with appropriate efficiency and in a manner that commands the respect of, or demonstrates appropriate courtesy to, co-workers and the public. Success in this role is demonstrated by developing and maintaining proficiency in assigned tasks, retaining technical knowledge, exercising safe work habits, and contributing positively to team performance. Skills and experience gained during this term may better position successful candidates for future consideration in applying for permanent employment opportunities.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Demonstrated basic mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
Ability to follow verbal and written direction, retain task knowledge, and work effectively in a team environment.
Ability to safely learn and operate equipment and machinery necessary to perform assigned tasks.
Ability to communicate tactfully and courteously with co-workers and the public.
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Washington State driver's license by date of hire.
Must maintain a satisfactory driving record per Department standards.
An employment driver's abstract is required at the time of interview.

Responsibilities

Assist with and independently perform water main and service line repairs, including locating, excavating, and restoring pavement and surfaces
Inspect, operate, and maintain fire hydrants and water system valves
Assist with and perform unidirectional flushing of water mains
Replace aging water meters and associated service components
Inspect and maintain system plumbing and flushing components
Perform vegetation management around water infrastructure
Excavate and expose underground utility pipes using hand tools and power equipment
Operate jackhammers, compactors, and other power equipment
Perform worksite and vehicle cleanup
Drive and operate light utility vehicles
Assist with traffic control setup and flagging operations as needed
Participate in routine and emergency response activities as assigned
Document work activities and maintain accurate field records
Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisory staff
