About The Position

The Maintenance Worker III performs semi-skilled work in a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction assignments, safely using specialized tools and operating equipment to complete assigned work as part of the Storm water Division in the Department of Public Utilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of and reports to a Maintenance Crew Supervisor II. This full-time, non-exempt position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 13 paid holidays plus one floating holiday, vacation and sick leave, health insurance with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, gym membership reimbursement, tuition assistance, and professional development opportunities. Requirements

High school diploma or GED AND at least 1 year of related experience in maintenance, repair, and/or construction activities to which assigned.
OR 3 or more years of related experience in maintenance, repair, and/or construction activities to which assigned.
OR An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Subject to emergency and stand-by call and must respond within minimum response time to the City facility based on Departmental guidelines. (For Utilities 40-minute response time)
Must obtain and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to city criteria.
Must obtain and maintain a Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement within 6 months of employment.
Based on assignment , must obtain and maintain a Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) Safety-Basic level certification.
Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, pre-employment physical, and pre-employment drug-screening.
Position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.
Must obtain and maintain all certifications required by applicable federal, state and local regulations.

General knowledge of methods and tools used in maintenance and repair for assigned area.
General knowledge of mechanical and equipment operation.
General knowledge of occupational hazards and safety requirements of the trade.
Understand and apply basic instructions and applications.
When assigned to Utilities: General knowledge of installation of underground utilities.
General knowledge of Virginia damage prevention laws and regulations, and VA811 color coding.
Reading Basic: ability to understand the meaning of commonly used multi-syllable words and simple paragraphs. Ability to read and understand written instructions, work orders, construction plans, drawings, signs, and notices.
Writing Basic: writing skill to provide information, documentation, and/or records on maintenance, needs, repairs, and/or series of numbers and addresses.
Math Basic: ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.
Communication Skills Routine: Regular & routine interaction involving providing or exchanging basic information, explain issues and concerns, listen to others and to identify maintenance and repair issues or problems. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers.
Requires Immediate Direction: normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. May receive general direction on routine and preventive maintenance and repair issues. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.
Skilled: Practical knowledge of operations of preventive and routine maintenance and repair of assigned work area.
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, including balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking pushing/pulling, heavy lifting and gross and fine motor skills.
Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Ability to exchange accurate information involving position duties.
Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).

Responsibilities

Performs maintenance, repair, and construction work utilizing specialized tools/equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures and regulations.
May include flagging, digging trenches, skilled pipefitting, right-of-way, or other construction duties based on assignment.
Performs skilled pipefitting duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of water/wastewater/stormwater systems.
Works with pipes, fittings, valves, fire hydrants and manholes.
Operates the Closed-Circuit Television Sewer Main Inspection (CCTV) as a preventative maintenance, pre-acceptance inspection, and to identify major line breaks or minor breaks before they become an emergency.
Operates sanitary vac-truck to provide preventative maintenance in the form of jetting and cleaning sewer mains to avoid potential overflows.
Inspects and prepares the job site for maintenance and repair of infrastructure, facilities, and/or grounds.
Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with maintenance, repair, custodial, and construction operations.
Operates vehicles and equipment according to project need, which may include but is not limited to front-end loader, dump truck, jackhammer, tamper, and/or other equipment related to assignment.
Conducts cleanup and restoration work on assignments.
Ensures the execution of work in accordance with applicable safety standards and standard operating procedures, including but not limited to traffic control, signage, barricades, lane closure, proper utilization of equipment and tools, etc.
Assists senior workers in emergency operations and special events for more complex tasks.
Completes all work according to maintenance standards and ensures proper care in the use and upkeep of tools and equipment assigned.
Follows safety regulations and standard procedures, adheres to checklists and follows detailed instructions for task completion; attends appropriate safety trainings.
Responds to special events and emergency related situations, including inclement weather situations such as snow or debris removal.
Subject to be called back to work to the City in emergencies or as needed to provide necessary services to the public.
Must have the ability to be contacted and respond based on Departmental guidelines.
Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resource, including work time.
Regular and reliable attendance.
May serve in a lead role in skilled work on site projects and in the use of tools and equipment providing guidance, training, or instruction.
Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.
