About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to perform a variety of entry level field services tasks within the Utilities department. Employees in this classification are eligible for noncompetitive career ladder promotion to Utilities Field Technician II after meeting the established career ladder requirements. This is an entry-level position to assist other staff with and learn various tasks and duties related to swales, flood control, point repairs, slip lining, dead end cleaning, canal cleaning, and storm water conveyance system installation. The role involves setting well points, loading and unloading equipment, supplies, tools, and materials. Responsibilities include cleaning culverts, gutters, ditches, swales, storm drains, and canals. The technician will also remove and replace sod and sprinkler heads, repair concrete and asphalt, locate and install clean-outs and basic sewer repairs, service line flow tests, clear blocked service lines, repair water leaks, and repair and install water service lines. Additionally, the role involves repairing, replacing, and inspecting water mains and fire hydrants, testing and flushing fire hydrant water flow, and opening and closing water valves. The position requires adherence to safety procedures, utilization of safety equipment, and monitoring the work environment for safety. May involve operating a truck or other automotive equipment and performing other general manual labor. A variety of power and hand tools will be used to complete tasks.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Basic computer operations skills.
• Possess (or able to obtain within fourteen (14) days of hire) and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
• For Utilities Field Technicians in Distribution) Must possess (or able to obtain within eighteen (18) months of hire) and maintain a Level III Water Distribution License.
• Successfully complete a training program within one (1) year in the position, covering safety, GIS, and Blueprint reading.
• Basic math skills.
• Ability to use the tools and equipment in area of assignment.
• Ability to read maps.
• Ability to properly open and close valves.
• Ability to record and deliver information.
• Ability to work in confined spaces.
• Ability to communicate both orally and in writing; understand and follow communications, keep records and make reports.
• Ability to work as a member of a team.

Nice To Haves

• Individuals selected for this position will be required to successfully complete a training program within one (1) year in the position. The training program will cover several facets of the job, including various concepts of safety, GIS, and Blueprint reading. Successful completion of the training program will be based on meeting the criteria outlined in the Career Path Advancement Requirements section (below). Failure to successfully complete the requirements of the program may result in termination from the training program and separation of employment.
