About The Position

This position announcement will be used to fill a Full-time, Regular, Represented, Safety Sensitive Automotive Mechanic I vacancy in the Department of Central Services, Fleet Division. This is mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment. Work involves responsibility for participating in the mechanical repair and maintenance of a variety of automotive equipment including passenger cars, trucks, tractors, and related standard and specialized equipment. Initially, work is closely supervised; as proficiency is gained, employees are expected to perform routine repair assignments independently. Employees assist higher-level mechanics in complex repair work, or perform complex repairs under supervision. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for quality of workmanship.

Requirements

  • Sufficient education to read and interpret automotive repair manuals
  • Six (6) or more months in basic automotive repair and maintenance
  • A valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license

Responsibilities

  • Performs work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Inspects vehicle fluid levels and replenishes as necessary.
  • Tunes engines, changes tires, gaps and replaces spark plugs, sets timing; makes service calls.
  • Participates in the overhaul and repair of transmissions, differentials, and front and rear assemblies.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts including brakes, cooling, ignition, electrical, and fuel systems, mufflers, and exhaust pipes.
  • Repairs and overhauls carburetors and clutch assemblies; makes minor repairs to hydraulic systems.
  • Road-tests vehicles, reporting any safety issues to supervisor.
  • Reports machinery defects or malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Ensures that County vehicles and shop area are kept clean.
  • Assists higher-level mechanics in complex repairs and major overhaul work.
  • Performs related work as required.
