About The Position

Stryker’s Mako Robotics team is seeking a Staff-level User Interface and Experience Designer to design software experiences for robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery, initially focusing on Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA). The role combines visual and interaction design with hands-on technical execution to turn complex clinical workflows and product requirements into intuitive interfaces and detailed, production-ready specifications. The designer will contribute to current Mako applications and next-generation technologies, collaborating with engineering, product development, and design teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in User Interface Design, User Experience Design, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 4 years of professional experience in UI/UX design, software product design, interaction design, or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency with Figma, including shared design systems, component libraries, and high-fidelity interface designs.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator and Photoshop.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing software interfaces, creating interactive prototypes, and applying visual and interaction design principles.
  • A portfolio or representative work samples demonstrating relevant UI design capabilities.
  • Experience developing detailed UI specifications, design documentation, component definitions, and production-ready assets for software development teams.
  • Strong visual design, graphic design, and illustration skills, including creating instructional graphics, icons, and informational illustrations.
  • Experience with complex software applications, technical systems, or products requiring detailed and consistent user interfaces.
  • Experience with 3D modeling or rendering tools such as KeyShot, SolidWorks, or similar applications.
  • Experience designing software for medical devices, surgical systems, robotics, or other regulated or safety-critical industries.
  • Familiarity with usability engineering, accessibility principles, human factors, and user-centered design methodologies.
  • Experience collaborating with software development teams in Agile or Scrum environments.
  • Understanding of software development practices and how UI designs are translated into functional applications.
  • Experience collaborating across distributed teams and working independently within a matrixed organization.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, proactive communication, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop intuitive, visually consistent software interfaces for Mako robotic-assisted surgery applications, initially focusing on Total Hip Arthroplasty.
  • Create high-fidelity designs, screen layouts, interactive prototypes, and reusable UI components using Figma and established design systems.
  • Translate clinical workflows, product requirements, and user needs into clear, functional, and accessible software experiences.
  • Apply visual and interaction design principles, including typography, color, layout, navigation, messaging, component states, and user feedback.
  • Develop production-ready UI specifications that communicate design intent to software development teams.
  • Create and manage design assets, component libraries, naming conventions, documentation, and version-controlled design deliverables.
  • Contribute to next-generation Mako applications through workflow analysis, concept exploration, prototyping, and iterative design.
  • Collaborate with UX researchers, product owners, and cross-functional teams to incorporate user feedback, clinical insights, and usability considerations.
  • Support design reviews, usability evaluations, and voice-of-customer activities to refine interfaces and improve the user experience.
  • Balance user needs, technical feasibility, design consistency, and product requirements throughout development.
  • Partner with software engineers, scrum teams, product owners, systems engineers, and other designers to support implementation.
  • Collaborate across Mako hip, knee, and shoulder application design teams to maintain consistency across shared platforms and design systems.
  • Manage assigned design activities independently, proactively resolve challenges, and drive deliverables from concept through implementation.
  • Communicate design decisions, technical specifications, and recommendations to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes, documentation standards, tools, and team practices.
  • Support applicable medical device design controls, usability, and quality requirements throughout product development.
