About The Position

The Mills Institute at Northeastern University Upward Bound TRIO Program (UB) is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. UB assists low-income, first generation, middle school and high school students in the Cities of Oakland and Richmond by disseminating information on the college preparation process. The Summer Enrichment Program will provide academic instruction in core subjects: English, Sciences, and Mathematics. Upward Bound will also provide courses and workshops exploring various topics: Life Skills, Study Skills, College Preparation, Career Exploration, and Cultural Awareness. The Mills Institute at Northeastern University Upward Bound Program offers a six-week summer academic enrichment program for students entering grades 9th-12th. The UB summer program will be conducted at Mills at Northeastern University. Staff orientations will likely take place June 10th. Instruction for the UB Summer Program is scheduled to begin Monday, June 15th and continues through Thursday, July 24th. The daily schedule is approximately 8:30am-3:30pm, Monday –Friday. The Mills Institute at Northeastern University Upward Bound Program is currently seeking a highly motivated, knowledgeable, creative, engaging, student focused, experienced Summer Assistant to support the program activities and academic component. Academic courses will be taught by instructors to Oakland students in grades 9th-12th. We are seeking a Summer Assistant who possesses the skills to address student needs, interests, abilities, and curiosities in various subjects and activities offered throughout the summer program. Each course will be defined by: Small classes (up to 20 students), Daily in-class instruction, group work, real-world application of concepts taught, quizzes, Pre & post assessments, Weekly Progress Reports.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of subject matter and skill acquisition in various academic courses suitable for 9th-12th grade students
  • Mission-driven and passionate about programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience-solving problems including conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, maintaining a professional composure when dealing with common problems that occur in events and classroom settings.
  • Minimum of a Sophomore year status in college coursework.
  • Requires passing fingerprinting and a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of child/adolescent development and different learning styles
  • Minimum 2 years direct working relationship/or tutoring low-income, first-generation college-bound students.
  • Strong preference given to candidates with experience working with youth.

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring daily attendance
  • Support students with work completion
  • Student lunch time supervision
  • Prep materials for instructors
  • Supervise students on weekly field trips
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and support of UB mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior
  • Participate in UB weekly staff meetings
  • Attend staff orientation/planning sessions and program activities.
  • Prepare students for End of Summer Showcase
  • Support UB students during daily tutoring sessions
  • Track student attendance during mandatory tutoring sessions
  • Attending weekly staff meetings
  • Submission of Student Conduct reports
  • Other duties as assigned by Associate Director or Office Manager
