About The Position

The Mills Institute at Northeastern University Upward Bound (MCUB) TRIO Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. MCUB is designed to enhance the academic skills of low-income first-generation college-bound high school students in the Oakland and West Contra Costa Unified School District with the goal that participants will pursue post-secondary education. The Summer Enrichment Program will provide academic instruction in core subjects: English, Sciences, and Mathematics. MCUB will also provide courses and workshops exploring various topics: Life Skills, Study Skills, College Preparation, Career Exploration, and Cultural Awareness. The MCUB Program offers a six-week summer academic enrichment program for students entering grades 9th-12th. The MCUB summer program will be conducted on the Mills College Campus. Staff orientations will likely take place June 11th from 10:30 am to 4 pm. Instruction for the MCUB Summer Program is scheduled to begin Monday, June 15th and continues through Thursday, July 23rd. Summer RA employment begins with a mandatory training on Thursday, June 11th. The residential stay begins Sunday, July 12, 2026 and continues through Friday, July 24, 2026. RAs are required to live in the residence hall from Sunday afternoon to Friday evening with no residential stay on weekends. The final schedule is subject to change.

Requirements

  • Have completed sophomore year in college or university
  • Be in good academic standing at college or university
  • Ability to take appropriate steps to promote and sustain effective working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment
  • Be able to work safely in compliance with the College Injury and Illness Prevention Plan
  • Experience in a college residential setting
  • Experience with low-income, first generations college-bound students
  • Ability to be punctual, professional, positive, motivated, interactive, and flexible
  • Ability to multitask, handle stress, model behavior that is expected of students and take initiative to address unexpected program or participant needs
  • Ability to create and maintain appropriate boundaries with students and other program staff
  • Upon selection, RA must submit fingerprints for the Department of Justice Background Check

Responsibilities

  • Providing supervision of all residential students.
  • Assisting in the set-up and clean-up of the UB residence hall common areas or other rooms used by the program.
  • Assisting in gathering supplies for program activities.
  • Supervising free time activity for students.
  • Providing academic assistance during study hall.
  • Assisting in planning, coordinating, and implementing social, cultural, and recreational activities.
  • Following and enforcing the rules and regulations of the College and the Upward Bound Program at all times.
  • Participating in nightly staff meetings with the residential team.
  • Supervising use of all program equipment and immediately reporting any missing or damaged property to the Director.
  • Assisting in enhancing the living environment and promoting an educational atmosphere in the residence hall.
  • Providing academic assistance during study hall.
  • Providing supervision during meal times.
  • Attend orientation/planning sessions and program activities.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director.
