About The Position

United Way of Southern Nevada is hiring United Readers Mentors to support kindergarten through fifth-grade students at Lee Antonello Elementary School in North Las Vegas. Mentors use a predetermined curriculum, lesson plans, and training to lead small-group literacy lessons and activities during reading intervention blocks. The program aims to strengthen students’ foundational reading skills and fluency, address learning gaps, and improve third-grade reading scores in Southern Nevada. Mentors also serve as ambassadors for the United Readers Program and UWSN’s mission to provide learning opportunities and help children build resilience and confidence as lifelong learners. This is a part-time, temporary, grant-funded position. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., approximately 28–30 hours per week. The posting describes the anticipated employment period as November 2026 through May 2027; it also states work may run from late November 2026 through the end of June 2027, subject to program requirements and available funding. The role is based in person at an assigned school site and may occasionally require in-person attendance at UWSN’s office. Pay is $20.00 per hour. Mentors must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be able to work during the school day, have basic computer skills and comfort using Microsoft Office, and have reliable transportation and a valid government-issued photo ID. Interest or experience in education or a related field, a community-service mindset, willingness to learn, and a desire to work with young children are sought. Experience with young children and child development is encouraged but not required. Mentors are informally observed monthly and formally evaluated mid-term and toward the end of the school year. The position is supported in whole or in part by state funds from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation; continued employment beyond the award period is not guaranteed and depends on future funding.
