United Readers Mentors work with kindergarten through fifth-grade students in Southern Nevada to develop literacy skills and improve reading fluency. Using a predetermined curriculum, lesson plans, and training, mentors lead small-group lessons and activities during reading intervention blocks in coordination with school learning facilitators. The program aims to strengthen foundational reading skills, increase student reading proficiency, and improve third-grade reading scores. Mentors also serve as ambassadors for United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) and its mission to support children’s learning, resilience, and confidence. This is a part-time, temporary, grant-funded role based at Lee Antonello Elementary School in North Las Vegas. Mentors work in person Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for approximately 28–30 hours per week. The posting gives an anticipated employment period of November 2026 through May 2027 and also describes work continuing from late November 2026 through the end of June 2027; continued employment through the 2026–2027 school year depends on program requirements and available funding. Mentors may occasionally report in person to UWSN’s office. The school-site environment is similar to an average school setting and may include noise, movement, odors, and activity. Mentors attend required training and orientation, communicate with school and UWSN staff, and participate in student assessment, data review, and goal setting. Performance is assessed through monthly informal observations and formal mid-year and end-of-year evaluations. The position is supported in whole or in part by state funds provided by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR); continued employment beyond the current award period is not guaranteed.
