About The Position

The Unit Secretary, Med Surg is responsible for completing necessary forms, requisitions, and communications to implement orders. This role requires proficiency in Computerized Nursing Informatics and maintaining accurate patient records. The Unit Secretary also handles telephone and verbal communications, manages the Nurse Locator and Patient Call systems, and ensures the patient chart is in appropriate functional order. Confidentiality regarding patients is paramount, as is maintaining adequate supplies on the unit. Adherence to safety and blood/body fluid policies is required. The role involves providing service excellence to all customers and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare informatics systems.
  • Successful completion of medical terminology course or successfully pass medical terminology challenge exam.

Nice To Haves

  • Medical Secretary/Medical Receptionist experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Completes necessary forms, requisitions and communications necessary to implement orders.
  • Sustains proficiency in Computerized Nursing Informatics (information systems).
  • Maintains accurate and complete patient records on assigned nursing units by established department policies and procedures, including but limited to: Initiates and assembles charts, Assists with obtaining and filing patient Health Care Proxy, Assists with organizing patient transfers within the hospital to other acute care facilities, Assists with discharge process of patients from the EMR, Initiates scheduling of PCP follow-up appointments.
  • Responds in a professional and courteous manner in all telephone and verbal communications skills with internal and external customers.
  • Properly utilizes Nurse Locator for timely communications with nursing staff; and Patient Call system to initiate timely responsiveness to patient call bells.
  • Maintains patient chart in appropriate functional order as prescribed by hospital policy.
  • Represents hospital in the community and within the hospital by maintaining confidentiality regarding patients.
  • Maintains adequate quantity of forms, materials and supplies on assigned unit.
  • Adheres to safety, blood/body fluid policies and procedures.
  • Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.
  • Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
