About The Position

The Greater Philadelphia YMCA is hiring a seasonal Unit Leader for Day Camp at Camp Speers in the Poconos. The Unit Leader helps create a positive summer camp community, supports children’s potential and age-appropriate development, and leads staff in delivering quality camp programs. The role includes planning and overseeing activities, promoting camper and staff safety, addressing inappropriate behavior, and communicating with parents and guardians. The YMCA provides training and opportunities to learn and grow.

Requirements

At least 18 years old.
High school graduate or equivalent, or enrolled in at least two years of child development coursework approved by state licensing requirements.
Experience working with children and at least two seasons as a Y Camp Counselor or counselor in a comparable program.
Enthusiasm, a sense of humor, patience, and experience working with children.
Ability to lead and motivate a team.
Ability to deal effectively with inappropriate behavior and recognize hazardous situations.

Responsibilities

Monitor and train staff to ensure effective implementation of programs and activities and adherence to policies and procedures.
Coach and train staff to provide a quality camping experience.
Plan and oversee a variety of camp activities, ensuring they are age appropriate and support campers’ growth and development.
Identify, address, and redirect or correct inappropriate behavior.
Ensure appropriate behavior of campers and staff to reduce the risk of accidents.
Assist with effective communication with parents and guardians about campers and camp activities.
