About The Position

IAT Insurance Group has an immediate opening for an Underwriting Specialist from our Scottsdale, AZ or Pasadena, CA location. For the right candidate, other West region IAT locations, including remote, may be considered. This role focuses on underwriting excess casualty business in the West region, with a strong emphasis on building and managing relationships with wholesale partners. Strong candidates will have experience working in the West Coast market and a track record of developing a profitable middle-market book, particularly accounts with premiums over $40,000 and low frequency, moderate severity exposures. Success in this role requires balancing speed to market with disciplined coverage evaluation and pricing. This role works a hybrid schedule that requires working from the office Monday through Wednesday, with the option of working Thursday and Friday remotely.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 8+ years of relevant experience or the equivalent (twelve years of relevant commercial insurance experience).
  • Knowledge of Excess and Surplus is required.
  • Must possess the ability to appropriately apply loss development and advanced loss analysis concepts to achieve optimal pricing of risk.
  • Must possess the ability to creatively utilize coverage features, deductibles, or reinsurance on individual risks to achieve company objectives.
  • Agency Management is a must.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and must not require VISA sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment purposes.

Nice To Haves

  • Wholesale surplus lines experience
  • CPCU, ARM, or AU industry designations
  • INS21, 22, and 23 or equivalent is a plus
  • Eight or more years of experience in commercial Insurance

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and manage a portfolio of business within assigned authority, making sound decisions that balance risk and profitability.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with agents and brokers, identifying when to expand partnerships or step away.
  • Review applications, financials, loss history, inspection reports, and other data to assess risk and determine appropriate terms.
  • Follow underwriting guidelines, internal processes, and regulatory requirements in all decisions.
  • Communicate clearly and directly with internal teams and external partners, explaining decisions, products, and next steps.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to inquiries, maintaining a high level of service.
  • Work with distribution partners to support business growth and identify new opportunities.
  • Use performance data to manage your book of business and improve results.
  • Stay informed on market conditions, industry trends, and competitor activity.
  • Perform other duties as needed
