Intact’s Global Specialty Lines business operates across more than 20 verticals in four distinct markets: U.S., Canada, UK, and Europe. The following opportunity is for our U.S. team. We currently have an opportunity for an Underwriting Specialist to join our growing Renewable Energy team, based in one of our offices nationwide or located remotely. The Underwriting Specialist underwrites and manages a portfolio of highly complex, specialty accounts with broad authority levels across property and casualty lines. They assist with the development and execution of strategic initiatives that contribute to the growth and profitability of that book of business in an assigned territory. The focus is on new business production, large account management, and relationship development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 5-10 years of progressively advancing Renewable Energy or related (Construction, Energy Property, Energy Casualty, etc.) specialty underwriting experience.
  • Proven ability to evaluate technical and complex risks across wind, solar, battery storage, and emerging clean energy technologies, analyze associated underwriting exposures, and develop tailored insurance solutions that balance profitability, risk appetite, and client needs.
  • Established network of strong relationships with brokers, clients, and industry stakeholders, with a track record of generating new business opportunities and maintaining a high-quality portfolio.
  • Client-focused and solutions-oriented approach to account management, leveraging exceptional communication, presentation, and negotiation skills to consistently deliver responsive service, articulate coverage and risk management recommendations, foster long-term relationships, and support broker and customer retention initiatives.
  • Team-oriented individual who values collaboration with peers as well as claims and risk engineering functions while maintaining accountability for individual performance and results.

Responsibilities

  • Maximizes opportunities for underwriting profitable new and renewal business, as appropriate based on market conditions, by leveraging business relationships, product knowledge, and underwriting acumen.
  • Develops and maintains an active target account list tracking prospects and account rounding and/or missed opportunities.
  • Manages the financial performance of the assigned book of business, including accident year loss ratio, premium plans (new business, retention, and rate/exposure increases), and commission targets.
  • Analyzes underwriting submission information, including but not limited to policy wordings, insured values, engineering and risk control reports, loss history, contractual agreements, and financials to assess risk quality and risk appetite.
  • Uses available tools and resources to support risk analysis and underwriting decisions.
  • Underwrites a book of business and manages underwriting quality and book management.
  • Executes underwriting strategy as determined by management, including portfolio management, self-audits of new and renewal business, and well-documented approvals of underwriting edits.
  • Ensures compliance with underwriting guidelines, standards, and assigned underwriting authorities.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of exposures and key coverage issues.
  • Makes underwriting decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within broad underwriting authority.
  • Collaborates with a team of internal risk control experts to conduct detailed technical risk analysis.
  • Implements underwriting decisions in compliance with relevant laws, statutes, and requirements.
  • Develops superior working relationships with producers to successfully promote achievement of mutual growth and profitability goals and to supply the appropriate products and services.
  • From a sales perspective, identifies gaps in coverage and/or risk management processes, understands where the company can make a difference based on those gaps, and uses that information to help retain or obtain a customer.
  • Works closely with and establishes strong business partnerships with other departments, including claims, actuary, and risk control staff, to better service producers and accounts.
  • Regularly travels to key producers/accounts and remains highly visible in the marketplace.
  • Anticipates the needs of the agency plant, analyzes trends, and implements proactive strategies that best position the business.
  • Understands and communicates the company’s underwriting appetite.
  • Monitors agency action plans and participates in account management, agency planning, and marketing meetings to best position the business for the future.
  • Participates in industry events and/or committees.
  • Gathers and analyzes competitor information and producer-specific reports on assigned producers’ new business flow, retention, profitability, and potential.
  • Works with other underwriting staff to determine and make recommendations for marketing, pricing, products, and systems.
  • Provides training and mentoring to less experienced underwriters.
  • Maintains a strong professional knowledge of competitive, regulatory, and legal environments and applies this information effectively.
  • Proactively monitors developments in both the insurance and renewable energy markets to keep up with the latest innovations, trends, and emerging risks.
