About The Position

Westcor Land Title Insurance Company is seeking an Underwriting Counsel to analyze title insurance risks, provide underwriting solutions, and ensure compliance with applicable laws. The role handles residential and limited commercial transactions, advises agents, sales staff, and title examiners, and responds to indemnity requests and a high volume of inquiries. It also includes educating title agents and production staff through online and in-person training seminars, providing customer service, and traveling with sales staff for agent visits throughout Ohio. The position works with a remote team.

The successful candidate will have a Juris Doctor degree, at least five years of experience concentrated in Ohio real property and title insurance, and membership in good standing with the Ohio Bar. Thorough knowledge of Ohio real property law and the Ohio title insurance industry, along with strong communication, relationship-building, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, is required. Multi-state experience, particularly in Michigan, Indiana, or Kentucky, is preferred.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.

• Member in good standing with the Ohio Bar.
• Thorough knowledge of Ohio real property law and related areas applicable to real property transactions.
• Knowledge of the Ohio title insurance industry.

• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; solve practical problems involving concrete variables and limited standardization; and interpret written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule-based instructions.
• Excellent understanding of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of the real estate title and settlement process.

• Multi-state experience, particularly in Michigan, Indiana, and/or Kentucky.

Responsibilities

• Analyze title insurance risks, underwriting issues, and regulatory concerns.
• Provide underwriting solutions to agents, sales team members, and title examiners in accordance with Westcor guidelines and local, state, and federal law.
• Underwrite residential and limited commercial transactions.
• Present online and in-person training seminars for title agents and production staff.
• Provide outstanding customer service while making sound underwriting decisions.
• Respond to a high volume of underwriting inquiries by email and telephone in a timely, responsive, and professional manner.
• Analyze and respond to indemnity requests.
• Travel with sales staff for agent visits throughout Ohio.
• Work effectively in a remote team environment.
